1.0 Is the Loneliest Number — Matt Mullenweg

Usage is like oxygen for ideas. You can never fully anticipate how an audience is going to react to something you’ve created until it’s out there. That means every moment you’re working on something without it being in the public it’s actually dying, deprived of the oxygen of the real world. It’s even worse because development doesn’t happen in a vacuum — if you have a halfway decent idea, you can be sure that there are two or three teams somewhere in the world that independently came up with it and are working on the same thing, or something you haven’t even imagined that disrupts the market you’re working in. (Think of all the podcasting companies — including Ev Williams’ Odeo — before iTunes built podcasting functionality in.)

By shipping early and often you have the unique competitive advantage of hearing from real people what they think of your work, which in best case helps you anticipate market direction, and in worst case gives you a few people rooting for you that you can email when your team pivots to a new idea. Nothing can recreate the crucible of real usage.

Google's Instant Preview May Just Shake Up Web Design Forever | Fast Company

As pointed out by Wired, the feature works on slower connections, so that users who most need a greater degree of precision in their searches--that is, those with, say dial-up connections, whose every click can cost precious time--will get it. Hence no messing around for hours, trying to find the information one's after. Sweet for users, eh? Sweetest, however, for Google.

Here's why. Instant Preview will potentially allow Google to own more of our browsing experience. Instead of leaving Google in order to browse the web, you will be browsing the results, rather than the pages suggested in the search itself. The feature may also force websites to redesign their pages in order to conform to Google's design criteria: on the firm's Webmaster Central blog, this is one of its suggestions.

Try to avoid interstitial pages, ad pop-ups, or other elements that interfere with your content. In some cases, these distracting elements may be picked up in the preview of your page, making the screenshots less attractive.

Innovation and performance management - BankerVision

Hat tip to Stefan Lindegard who quotes David Nordfors post speaking to the challenges of the corporate innovator:

“When someone tries to innovate within a traditional organization,

few will understand what he/she is doing,

but everybody will understand who is a trouble-maker.

After the innovation has been embraced by the organization,

few will remember who started it,

but everybody will remember who was a trouble-maker.

This is the dilemma encountered by many intrapreneurs -

they risk punishment for success.”

If you accept the above - and it's really hard not to if you've ever tried to drive innovation in a large organisation - it is possible to conclude that if noone remembers you as a troublemaker, then you haven't been innovating.

And what follows is innovators will rarely, if ever, fit well with a traditional performance management system.

In web #analytics, everything is relative | Internet Marketing Strategy: Conversation Marketing

In web analytics, it's best to focus on your own data and on improving. Use yourself as the benchmark. This is your best strategy for two reasons:

Lack of accurate benchmarks

Accurate, internet- or industry-wide data on keyword searches, or competitors, or just about anything else, is scarce. Non-existent, really.

  1. 'Panel'-based statistics like Compete.com (which I love) and Alexa (which I'm starting to like again) sweep in an incredibly wide range of web sites. The bounce rate on your online bike shop won't compare to, say, the bounce rate on the New York Times web site.
  2. Statistics within your own industry will include outliers at both end of the spectrum: At one end are the companies that have invested 100x your budget to become the shining pinnacle of conversion rate optimization. At the other, you'll be comparing yourself to the sites designed according to 1992 best practices. Even if you can narrow down the data in #1, it'll be inaccurate..
  3. Keyword data from Google is about as trustworthy as a credit default swap.
  4. Keyword data from other sources may be more trustworthy, but shows you a tiny sliver of total search traffic.

Foursquare: Rest in Peace? | Social Media Today

Any location based service that wants to stay alive needs to do something big, bold, and exciting. No more meaningless virtual badges. No more check-in deal guessing games. Provide real value to people. Otherwise, the foot of Mark Zuckerberg will crush every other service that tries.

World’s biggest banks have poor approach to social media, new report shows - Investment International

Deutsche Bank, Crédit Agricole and BNP Paribas come out as winners in a ranking of the social media activities of the world’s top 30 Wealth Managers.

In the survey by the Swiss consulting company, MyPrivateBanking Research, Deutsche Bank ranks first, with a total score of 38 out of possible 50 points. In particular, Deutsche Bank scores well with its Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter activities. Crédit Agricole and BNP Paribas score lower overall in these networks, but have strengths in their Youtube and mobile application offerings.

Overall, the report, Wealth Management and Social Media, comes to the conclusion that the social media presence of the 30 biggest Wealth Managers leaves a lot to be desired. Just a small group of four banks, Deutsche Bank, Crédit Agricole, BNP Paribas and Credit Suisse, have a consistent and comprehensive strategic approach toward social media.

Another group of only six banks use bits and pieces of the social media framework to get in touch and start conversations with clients and users. But most leading banks, two thirds in all, either have no presence whatever or only engage in sporadic activities on social media networks. No US based bank is in the Top10.

How a foosball table can kill your startup – part two

  1. If we tracked the usage of Guitar Hero setups, foosball tables, pinball machines, etc., we would see that utilization of them is not really worth their cost and the rent we pay for the space they take up.
  2. Often the toy/activity choice we make is driven by what we personally like. I highly doubt anyone actually thinks about how employees from other demographic groups perceive them. Therefore, we unconsciously create an environment of discrimination.
  3. Innovation happens outside of the walls of our offices. Encourage your employees to get outside and network with their customers and spend more time with their families.
  4. Employees are not stupid! We may be able to attract them with these “benefits”, but the novelty wears off quickly. The deeper we can tap into satisfying the needs of our employees, the more likely they will stay with us. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is often ignored at our own peril.

iPhone DST bug causing alarms to fail across Europe (updated) -- Engadget

The bug (demoed on video after the break by Roman) appears when using a repeating alarm for anything other than "every day." So for example, your alarm will go off an hour late if it's set for "weekdays," or "weekends," or every "Monday." The following alarms are not affected by the bug:
  • An alarm that doesn't repeat (repeat set to "never")
  • An alarm set to repeat "every day"

Facebook Adds “Unlike Page” Button to Page Stories

Facebook has made it dramatically easier to Unlike Pages. Upon removing a Page’s update or the activity story generated from Liking a Page from your news feed or wall, you are given the option to Unlike that Page.

Last week Facebook gave the option to remove, mute, or blacklist applications when removing their stories, and now a similar functionality is available on Page stories. This puts pressure on Pages to not send spammy, irrelevant, or too many updates.
