Michael was on hand to present the Accenture Technology Vision 2011, a cross-industry research project that takes stock of the evolving trends in IT and how they will impact business and society as a whole. The research team looked into 400 hypotheses based on input from scientists, architects and engineers. They found fifty that held true, which they consolidated into eight trends:
- Data takes its rightful place as a platform.
- Analytics is driving a discontinuous evolution from business intelligence.
- Cloud computing will create more value higher up the stack.
- Architecture will shift from server-centric to service-centric.
- IT security will respond rapidly, progressively—and in proportion.
- Data privacy will adopt a risk-based approach.
- Social platforms will emerge as a new source of business intelligence.
- User experience is what matters.

Why #PayPal Doesn't Care About #NFC | Fast Company
You'd think that wave-and-pay smartphone technology would be top priority for PayPal, one of the biggest competitors in the mobile payments space. But while big retailers love NFC for its hyper-targeted marketing potential, small businesses that run on payment services like PayPal may actually be interested in mobile payments for something far humbler: customer loyalty.
"The problem with NFC payments is that they don't do anything to help generate new leads," says Laura Chambers, Senior Director of Paypal Mobile. They also don't do much to encourage repeat business, she says. PayPal services about 9 million merchant accounts, many of which are mom-and-pops who don't want the expense of credit card terminals from a big company like Verifone. She says those merchants are ambivalent about how a customer pays--as long as they come back with friends and do it again.

Four New Types of CIO for the Future
Wang is a global traveler who meets with CIOs on a constant basis in his role as principal analyst and CEO of Constellation Research, an independent firm with a key focus on the transitions the enterprise is experiencing.
In the report, he proposes four new types of CIO: Chief "Infrastructure" Officers, Chief "Integration" Officers, Chief "Intelligence" Officers, and Chief "Innovation" Officers.
"The top CIOs will seek mastery of all four personas," Wang writes. "Others will bring expertise within the four personas into the team."
Chief Infrastructure Officers
Infrastructure officers will do much of what is expected of modern CIOs: reduce infrastructure costs, manage legacy technology and ensure smooth IT operations. Top priorities for infrastructure officers will include eliminating "shelfware," adopting virtualization and cloud technologies, and renegotiating contracts.
Chief Integration Officers
Another term for this might be "Chief Connection Officer." The integration officer will connect various IT systems. One important task will be bridging legacy and cloud services.
Chief Intelligence Officers
We don't need to tell you that data is the future. The intelligence officer will be tasked with getting the right data to the right people on the right devices. Their top priorities will be establishing and measuring key performance indicators, improving data quality and choosing the right business intelligence and analysis tools.
Chief Innovation Officers
We've seen this title thrown around a lot over the past few years. A few months ago, Business Week did a piece on this role. According the article, AMD, Citigroup, Coca Cola, DuPont, Humana and Owens Corning all have chief innovation officers.
According to the Constellation report, innovation officers will focus on identifying disruptive technologies and finding ways to apply them in the enterprise.

How it Works
FSO technology is surprisingly simple. It's based on connectivity between FSO-based optical wireless units, each consisting of an optical transceiver with a transmitter and a receiver to provide full-duplex (bi-directional) capability. Each optical wireless unit uses an optical source, plus a lens or telescope that transmits light through the atmosphere to another lens receiving the information. At this point, the receiving lens or telescope connects to a high-sensitivity receiver via
optical fiber.This FSO technology approach has a number of advantages:
- Requires no RF spectrum licensing.
- Is easily upgradeable, and its open interfaces support equipment from a variety of vendors, which helps enterprises and service providers protect their investment in embedded telecommunications infrastructures.
- Requires no security software upgrades.
- Is immune to radio frequency interference or saturation.
- Can be deployed behind windows, eliminating the need for costly rooftop rights.
FSO: Optical or Wireless?
Speed of fiber — flexibility of wireless.
Optical wireless, based on FSO-technology, is an outdoor wireless product category that provides the speed of fiber, with the flexibility of wireless. It enables optical transmission at speeds of up to 1.25 Gbps and, in the future, is capable of speeds of 10 Gbps using WDM. This is not possible with any fixed wireless or RF technology. Optical wireless also eliminates the need to buy expensive spectrum (it requires no FCC or municipal license approvals worldwide), which further distinguishes it from fixed wireless technologies. Moreover, FSO technology’s narrow beam transmission is typically two meters versus 20 meters and more for traditional, even newer radio-based technologies such as millimeter-wave radio. Optical wireless products' similarities with conventional wired optical solutions enable the seamless integration of access networks with optical core networks and helps to realize the vision of an

Why TIME’s 2010 Person Of The Year Means Nothing In 2010 | Gizmodo Australia
How was this Zuckerberg’s year? It wasn’t. For a roundup of entities that actually made 2010 the strange contortion of good and awful it was, you can look, ironically, at TIME’s “Runners Up” list: The Tea Party. Hamid Karzai. Julian Assange. The Chilean Miners.
Well, maybe not so much the Chilean Miners.
But to think that Assange – a man whose actions in less than one year have shocked governments around the world, sent the US State Department scrambling with its face beet-red, put INTERPOL on a controversial manhunt, and triggered internationally coordinated hacker retribution – was overlooked, is asinine. Assange’s determination to make information available at any cost is unprecedented in the history of information – and 2010 was the year his cause ignited, whether you consider him villainous or virtuous.
But we don’t need TIME to tell us any of that. Hell, you don’t need me to tell you any of that. Like the cables he leaked, Assange’s story was everywhere, spread online through a diversity of mediums, un-suppressible and undeniable despite the attempts of world governments.
You blogged about it. You GChatted about it. You texted about it. You commented about it here. And, we now know, you tweeted the hell out of it.
Statistical troves like Twitter’s 2010 Year In Review show (and validate) more than TIME can ever hope to in 2010. We don’t need a magazine to tell us what we care about. We know what we care about – because we’ve make it important, not an editorial board.
