ACT and sQuid join forces to launch #NFC and #mobile solutions

Two UK firms involved in contactless ticketing and payments have joined forces to launch NFC and mobile phone-based solutions.

Transit specialist Applied Card Technologies (ACT) and digital payments company sQuid have merged under a new corporate umbrella, Smart Transactions Group, in a deal valued at £53.3m (US$87m).

Official Google Blog: Coming soon: make your phone your wallet

Google Wallet is a key part of our ongoing effort to improve shopping for both businesses and consumers. It’s aimed at making it easier for you to pay for and save on the goods you want, while giving merchants more ways to offer coupons and loyalty programs to customers, as well as bridging the gap between online and offline commerce.

Because Google Wallet is a mobile app, it will do more than a regular wallet ever could. You'll be able to store your credit cards, offers, loyalty cards and gift cards, but without the bulk. When you tap to pay, your phone will also automatically redeem offers and earn loyalty points for you. Someday, even things like boarding passes, tickets, ID and keys could be stored in Google Wallet.

Most People Ready to Make Payments with Their #Mobile Phone

2011 is the beginning of the NFC mobile payments era and consumers are eager to pay with their mobile phones at stores, stadiums, restaurants and etc. – for convenience or impress a date. Well, that’s what we found in a recent survey we conducted with U.S. consumers.

Defined as a mobile generation with its pulse on digital trends, 18-34 year-olds are particularly ready to take their transactions to the next level:
  • 63 percent of 18-34 year olds would be at ease using mobile phones to make purchases versus those age 35 or older (37 percent).
  • Consumers ages 18-34 (65 percent) feel more naked without their phones than their wallets, compared to 34 percent of those in the 35 and older group.

"NFC continues to bounce around," the CEO of NFC chip maker NXP has told analysts during an earnings call. "Every time we talk to our friends at Google, they tell us to double the numbers for the Android expectations."

"If the low end happens," he explained, "maybe it doesn't get to be greater than 40 or 45 million units this year."

Spanish city to lend #NFC phones to tourists • NFC World

DIGGI: Gamma's service will see tourists using NFC in Caceres, western Spain

Tourists visiting the Spanish Unesco World Heritage city of Caceres will be able to borrow an NFC-enabled phone free of charge, allowing them to get information on the city, pick up discount coupons and access museums during their stay.

Google Nexus S phones will be provided to any visitor to the western Spanish city who requests one at the tourist information centre. Future plans include extending the functionality throughout the city so that visitors can also use the phones to buy goods in shops.

#NFC in 2011: U.S. #Bank Testing NFC in 20 Different Markets

Also involved in the pilot program is payments processing provider FIS and the payments specialist Monitise, which the bank credited with the development of the mobile banking application. Actually, there are two mobile apps involved - one written for BlackBerry smartphones, while the other is an iPhone app. Both offer similar functionality, Venturo says.

Using the apps, customers can perform balance inquiries, pay their bills, see their transaction history, and even switch on or off the NFC functionality. The balance inquiry, specifically, is updated in real-time, reflecting the transactions that were just made at checkout.

Ironically, the on/off switch is provided to address customers' fears regarding this new technology's security, despite the fact that NFC, in truth, provides more security than the mag stripe standard used on credit cards today. That feature may or may not arrive in the commercial product, if one is to launch.

Once enabled, these mobile phones can be used anywhere Visa has its contactless payment terminals in place. Merchants accepting these transactions exist in locations that range from pharmacies to fast food restaurants and even some convenience stores.

How the System Works

Customers participating in the pilot program receive the microSD card or iPhone case in the mail at the same time as their new credit card arrives. Included in the package are instructions as to how to insert the chip into the phone (or use the case), plus how to enable and use the mobile application.

At point-of-sale, customers can switch on the NFC functionality within the mobile application (if it was not on already), then simply wave their phone in front of the Visa payWave terminal in order to complete the transaction.

So far, the testers have found the process easy. "We're really happy with the pilot program's progress," Venturo told us in March, while noting that U.S. Bank continues to refine the overall experience.

How #Mobile #Payment Systems Are Redefining #Commerce

The phrase “mobile payment system” can apply to a number of different technologies and implementations for initiating and accepting transactions using a mobile device.

Forrester Research separates systems into two broad categories:

  • Payment systems that utilize a mobile network to initiate or authorize a transaction.
  • Contactless systems that use a mobile phone in lieu of a traditional credit card.

In other words, mobile payment systems apply to both how consumers pay for goods, as well as how merchants can process transactions.

Systems that Process Payments

On the processing side, startups like Square want to cut down the barriers associated with accepting credit card transactions.

Last October, Mashable’s Jennifer Van Grove discussed three services that allow merchants to accept credit card payments on mobile devices.

Square works by combining a small, square-shaped card reader with a free app for iPhone and Android. Simply plug the reader into the microphone jack of your smartphone and open the app. Now transactions can be processed either by swiping the card or hand-keying the digits.

The promise of something like Square — which charges a 2.75% transaction fee but has no other associated costs — is that it eliminates the need for smaller businesses to set up expensive point-of-sale systems. It’s also portable and can be used with any Android or iOS device.

Square isn’t the only mobile payment processor in town. Intuit GoPayment and VeriFone’s PAYware Mobile are also actively investing in the space.

Systems that Let Consumers Pay by Mobile Phone

When it comes to actually paying for items using your phone instead of with cash or a credit card, the future is all about NFC. Near field communication, or NFC, has been in the works for nearly ten years.

Analysts predict, however, that 2011 is the year that a sizable number of NFC-enabled devices will finally ship to consumers. The premise behind NFC is simple: Rather than swiping a card, just wave your phone at a payment terminal and be on your way.

We’re already seeing pilot NFC implementations from credit card companies and banks, including Visa, Bank of America, American Express and MasterCard.

Last fall, Visa worked with the transit and port authorities in New York to install Visa payWave terminals at select New York City subway stations. The advantages of NFC and contactless payments in areas like the subway are two-fold. First, it’s fast. Second, it helps cut down on the need for paper tickets.

A number of public transit systems are already in the process of transitioning to RFID-enabled transit cards. Using a mobile phone would accomplish the same feat, but with the benefit of also being refillable on the spot.


Going Green and Going Hands-Free


Aside from being able to accept and make payments in more locations, one of the advantages of modern mobile payment systems is environmental. Sure, the ecological impact of a paper credit card receipt is likely small — relatively speaking — but cutting down on excess waste is still good for the environment.

It can also be good for businesses’ bottom lines. Apple, one of the first major retail chains to accept payments using mobile devices (first Windows Mobile powered terminals and later the iPhone), has long emailed customers their receipt by default, only printing it on request.

It’s not clear how much money that decision has saved Apple over the years, but given the high number of transactions that each Apple retail store processes each day, it is likely significant. Moreover, every receipt that is emailed is one less wasted piece of printed paper.

#Microsoft Is Said to Plan #Mobile #Payment in New Phone Software #nfc - Businessweek

Microsoft plans to include mobile-payment technology in new versions of its operating system for smartphones as part of an effort to narrow Google Inc.’s lead in handset software, said the people, who asked to remain anonymous because the features aren’t public. The first devices boasting these features may be released this year, the people said.

The company joins a growing list of software providers aiming to benefit from rising demand for ways to purchase products and services on the go. Mobile payments may be used in $245 billion in transactions in 2014, up from $32 billion in 2010, according to Gartner Inc. Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer is under pressure to regain mobile-software market share lost to Apple Inc., maker of the iPhone, and Google’s Android.

The phones running Microsoft’s new software will be based on so-called Near Field Communication, which lets devices communicate wirelessly with objects immediately nearby. NFC technology enables payments and also lets consumers use a handset for other tasks, such as redeeming coupons and loyalty points at local merchants.

Why #PayPal Doesn't Care About #NFC | Fast Company

You'd think that wave-and-pay smartphone technology would be top priority for PayPal, one of the biggest competitors in the mobile payments space. But while big retailers love NFC for its hyper-targeted marketing potential, small businesses that run on payment services like PayPal may actually be interested in mobile payments for something far humbler: customer loyalty.

"The problem with NFC payments is that they don't do anything to help generate new leads," says Laura Chambers, Senior Director of Paypal Mobile. They also don't do much to encourage repeat business, she says. PayPal services about 9 million merchant accounts, many of which are mom-and-pops who don't want the expense of credit card terminals from a big company like Verifone. She says those merchants are ambivalent about how a customer pays--as long as they come back with friends and do it again.

Bloomberg reported Tuesday morning that in four months the trial program Google is launching will enable shoppers to use their phones to ring up purchases in the aforementioned locations.

The company will pay for installation of thousands of special cash-register systems from VeriFone Systems Inc. (PAY) at merchant locations, said one of the people, who requested anonymity because Google’s plans haven’t been made public. The registers would accept payments from mobile phones equipped with so-called near-field-communication technology.

HOW TO: Make Sure Your Smartphone Payments Are Secure

Better Understand Where Your Data Lives


Above and beyond everything else, common sense dictates: If there’s enough money in the bank, someone will try to steal it. 7-Eleven only carries $20 cash at night for a reason.

Your payment data should solely be stored on your phone and not in someone else’s database with tens of thousands of other credit card numbers. It’s hard to steal from someone if there’s no money in the safe. This is the only thing that truly deters hackers from going after a big score.

Keeping your payment data solely in your phone is equivalent to keeping your credit card in your wallet.

For consumers, you can usually find out where data is being stored by perusing a website carefully or reading well-researched articles and reviews. Journalists are doing a better and better job of ferreting out where your data lives, and how it is being passed around.

For app developers and payments services, keeping the data out of their servers absolutely involves more work and clever engineering. It’s hard to avoid any third parties (whether for processing or hardware), because those third parties can make things a lot easier on a startup. It’s worth it to start down this path if you haven’t already, since consumers will increasingly demand it.


Be Confident the Data’s Encrypted


The very best approaches to mobile security never send your payment information in any way that an enabled hacker in proximity could intercept your data.

It should be a priority to have industry-standard encryption. Customer smartphones talk directly to the POS. Ideally vendors and companies won’t even need this extra data in the first place.


Your Cheat Sheet


In sum, the stakes are high when the smartphone replaces the wallet. We have to rethink where the data lives and who has access to it, convenience notwithstanding. We’re all responsible for asking the hard questions to be informed consumers when we support a carrier, manufacturer, vendor network and technology.

Here’s your cheat sheet for owning your mobile transaction financial health. I urge you to ensure that your credit card information is:

  • Only sent to the venue’s POS system, rather than passing through third party services.
  • Only stored on your phone, where it’s safest, and not in the cloud.
  • Always encrypted when it is sent to the POS system, where the transaction is taking place.
