Why Are People Afraid of E-Commerce?

KAIZEN Analytics: A journey into Web analytics (Part IV): Web analytics, a new profession?

The main traits of a Web Analytics specialist
What are the key skills? If you want to lure into the realm of Web Analytics and make it not just an activity but a real full-time job, a good mix of the following skills you will need:
  • A good technical background: While it is not necessary to be a Web developer, you need to be technically savvy and have a good knowledge about the Web and related technologies (HTML, Flash, Javascript). You need to understand how the Web and online measurement tools work, what are the technical constraints and limitations, impacts on the data, etc. And because you are likely to be in contact with developers, agencies and technical staff at some points, mastering a minimum of technical language is essential.
  • Business-minded: To be honest, that’s the side of the job I prefer. While online analytics rely on technologies, it first serves a business purpose. Your primary goal is to help business being successful – not to deploy state-of-the-art technologies and gadgets. Good Web analysts have a strong interest in the business aspects and objectives. You can’t do this in you don’t dive into the business world, learn to think and act in a business-oriented way.
  • Strong communication skills: This is critical as you will spend a lot of your time conveying messages to different types of audience. You need to be able to explain in simple ways sometimes complex concepts and information. You need to remove complexity from the measured data, to turn this data into business insights and recommendations. You will be the interface between two worlds and you will need to translate business requirements into technical terms and vice-versa.
  • Diplomacy & psychology: These come with the communication skills. Political aspects in organizations are important and online analytics is no exception – especially when facing HiPPO’s (Highest Paid Person Opinions). You will have to be careful in the way you communicate – making sure you don’t offend anyone while keeping moving forward. Not everyone is prepared to know the truth about their online business (what I called the “Ignorance is bliss” syndrome). Add to that the fact that IT and business rarely have a love relation and you will get a good understanding of why diplomacy is required.
  • Analytics notions: You will juggle with data almost everyday therefore having a good grasp of basic statistic notions is important. These are important when analysing results, calculating sample sizes for tests or surveys, when evaluating the confidence level (how far can you trust your data?)... While it may be not required to be statistician – in some cases, advanced analytics skills may be more than just an asset.
  • Patience & perseverance, curiosity and more: Web analytics is a long journey as explained in previous parts of the series and it often takes a lot of patience and perseverance. It is still quite young and constantly evolving with the web (i.e. fast) – just look at the development of mobile or social media. You will not have to be afraid of changes and remain curious about new technologies, new practices, and new challenges.

Twitter Passes Myspace to Become Third Most Trafficked Social Network

In its climb up the social networking ladder, Twitter - the service that many mainstream Internet users still like to equate with inexplicably sharing what you had for lunch - has surpassed former social networking giant Myspace in unique visitors.

The Wall Street Journal reports that new data from comScore puts Twitter in the number three spot for social networks, bumping Myspace out of the top three.

6 Tips for Building a More Creative Company | MarketingProfs Daily Fix Blog

  1. Recognize and reward change makers. Let it be known that it literally pays to make a difference.
  2. Allow mistakes. Build awareness and encourage learning from mistakes. Making mistakes means you’re learning faster.
  3. Be assumption intolerant. Just because something is the way it is, does it mean it has to be that way?
  4. Admit when something is broken, and do something about it.  “It has always been done that way” isn’t justification for broken.
  5. Allow constructive critique of any part of the business. At the same time, encourage solution suggestions, not just pointing-out the problem.
  6. Encourage mingling between departments. We learn best practices from others as well as understand the bigger picture of how different gears of the company fit together.

Children's Websites: Usability Issues in Designing for Kids (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)

The biggest finding in both the new and old research is the need to target very narrow age groups when designing for children. Indeed, there's no such thing as "designing for children," defined as everybody aged 3–12. At a minimum, you must distinguish between young (3–5), mid-range (6–8), and older (9–12) children. Each group has different behaviors, and the users get substantially more web-savvy as they get older. And, those different needs range far beyond the obvious imperative to design differently for pre-readers, beginning readers, and moderately skilled readers.

We found that young users reacted negatively to content designed for kids that were even one school grade below or above their own level. Children are acutely aware of age differences: at one website, a 6-year-old said, "This website is for babies, maybe 4 or 5 years old. You can tell because of the cartoons and trains." (Although you might view both 5- and 6-year olds as "little kids," in the mind of a 6-year-old, the difference between them is vast.)

Finally, it's important to retain a consistent user experience rather than bounce users among pages targeting different age groups. In particular, by understanding what attracts children's attention, you can "bury" the links to service content for parents in places that kids are unlikely to click. Text-only footers worked well for this purpose.

Considering a Skunk Works? Think Again - Adam Richardson - Harvard Business Review

A small group operating autonomously can indeed succeed with audacious goals and produce something stunning. But it's one thing to have a one-off innovative product and quite another to have a ubiquitous innovation process. The problem with skunk works is that the knowledge of how to pull off breakthrough innovation tends to get stuck inside the group.

Google Scribe ABC's - nothing but another form of therapy

Google just announced their new experiment called Google Scribe.  The system basically tries to predict what you are going to write every time you hit a character and offers autocomplete options. It basically checks your previous few words to see if it fits into any common word clusters in the English language.  There is also a bookmarklet which allows you to use the system in any text box on the internet.

It is eerily impressive, very much like a literary version of the uncanny valley.

Anyways, I decided to check what it would create on its own when seeded by specific letters.  Below, you can find 26 paragraphs, each started with a specific letter of the alphabet. I only wrote the first letter and kept hitting tab..

As you can see in the first paragraph, after a few lines, it does get to a point where it starts looping...

The most popular infinite loop key seems to be: nothing but another form of therapy

[Aside: I can't help but think how useful this would be to spam senders.  Obviously, Google would recognize the constructs below as common enough to let them through the filters right?]

Also, I really wonder how this will be tweaked in the future.  Maybe I'll try again in a month to see if it gives me anything different.

Let me know if you get different results than the ones below.. Maybe we'll discover something interesting..

A List Apart: Articles: Strategic Content Management

Content strategy is shaking up the CMS industry

The rise of content strategy is dealing the content management industry a huge kick up the backside. In the web’s Wild West era, the CMS was run by the IT department—or sometimes a lone webmaster who knew HTML—so CMS choices were based on features, price, and cultural fit, rather than web or content strategy. It was the classic IT drill: selection committees, feature matrices, and business lunches with men wearing neckties.

The times they are a-changin’. According to Lisa Welchman, the web is now “the organization’s primary communications, sales, marketing, and transactional vehicle.” A CMS vendor’s target audience used to be the IT Director, and a successful outcome meant each department could easily update their content silo. Now, the target audience is an organization’s internal editorial infrastructure; and a successful outcome is a complex mix of achieving business objectives, implementing a content strategy, and crafting a user experience. The game just got more serious.

Numeric Filters: Issues and Best Practices :: UXmatters

Even as companies are struggling to overcome the old challenges of numeric faceted filters, designers are innovating interesting new controls with which they can solve those challenges. One such control is the slider, which gives unparalleled power to customers. However, successfully offering this power requires careful UX design in order to avoid potential pitfalls. Again, the following three issues with numeric filters surface most often:

  • representing discrete values for aspects as sets of ranges
  • emphasizing overconstrained filter states
  • being parsimonious with inventory information

Designers’ uninformed use of sliders for filters often exacerbates these issues. In this column, I have presented best practices as well as some novel approaches to help designers overcome these challenges. But there is simply no substitute for empathy and solid qualitative user research.

TED Blog | Building the game layer on top of the world: Seth Priebatsch on TED.com

IT in the Age of the Empowered Employee - Ted Schadler - The Conversation - Harvard Business Review

Incremental innovation and process improvements have always come from those closest to the problem. It's the basis of kaizen, a system where employees continually improve manufacturing processes. It's also a founding principle of Six Sigma — tap employees' relentless, incremental quality improvements.

The same is true in the way employees are harnessing consumer technologies — social, mobile, video, and cloud. They're improving how they do their jobs and solving your customer and business problems. And it's not just a few employees; it's a critical mass of employees. In a survey of more than 4,000 U.S. information workers, we found that 37% are using do-it-yourself technologies without IT's permission. LinkedIn, Google Docs, Smartsheet.com, Facebook, iPads, YouTube, Dropbox, Flipboard — the list is long and growing. Many of these scenarios are do-it-yourself projects.

The Dirty Truth About Digital Fasts - Alexandra Samuel - Harvard Business Review

To test our virtual relationships and budding feelings, we go offline. We fast. Disconnect, free ourselves from the hypnotic powers of the screen to know if what feels so compelling online is a meaningful experience or some kind of digital illusion.

But what most digital fasters describe the experience to be like is not a cleansing, or some detoxification — finally, I'm free of that corrupting Internet! — but rather a realization of how online and offline lives are integrated. One. A newly holistic life that includes time for both plugging in and unplugging, in equally conscious and intentional ways.

If unplugging needs to be a part of our approach to living and working digitally, it's through the daily practice of taking downtime, of opting for reflection rather than distraction. If longer-term digital fasts can remind you how to integrate offline moments back into your daily life, that's great. But you don't need a digital fast to justify meeting your needs online, and you don't need to unplug in order to justify plugging back in.

USAA is Amazing (NetBanker)

imageHow did USAA become the most innovative bank in America? I guess its big-bank competitors have been kind of preoccupied with other matters the past few years. And because USAA serves most of its 5 million banking customers remotely, it stands to profit from pushing the envelope in online/mobile delivery.

The latest proof that the bank is both innovative and adored? Posting user reviews right in the middle of the homepage, an inventive and unique approach. And with an average score of 4.7 out of 5 for both checking and auto insurance, the reviews serve as a transparent and effective mass endorsement.
